3 Reasons to Love the WetlandsJanuary 23, 2015

You must love nature if you fancy the wetlands. Not all outdoor enthusiasts would like to visit it, as it's not enticing on first glance. If you're a regular of National Geographic Channel (or other TV show about the environment), then you know that you must get down and dirty in able to explore the landscape. But there have been a change of attitude lately.

Not a few notice the unpredictable weather in many parts of the world. Storms with heavy rains and strong gusty winds displace thousands of people.

The World Wetlands Day, which is observed on February 2, is conceived to raise awareness on the importance of wetlands. Organised walking tour to Banksia Swamp (and the other notable swamps in Australia) are being held. And why not. Going there is the only way to appreciate it. You don't need a camera and think of ways of capturing a postcard-like picture of the place. An open mind will do, which is better when you're in the company of other people who have the same frame of mind.

Here are the reasons to visit the wetlands:

Wetlands regulates the flow of water. Anyone familiar with the sponge knows its importance in cleaning. It has the ability to hold water, only to be released when the hand squeezes it. This is the wetland's primary function, which seems hard to believe. Most of the images of wetlands feature still water, but you must be close to see the flow. It moves at the slow pace, which is important. There won't be any soil erosion, which usually leads to flooding. The nearby surroundings are moist, which means there's little chance of the landscape getting parch up. It also prevents the growth of algae that can be harmful to plants in that area.

Wildlife abounds in the wetlands. Birds often come to this part of the outdoors, where it become their nesting ground. In fact, birds from the north live there during winter. The wetlands provide them with fishes to feed on. These sea creatures also use this place to breed. Crabs also found it as a good place to burrow. This is a good sign of a healthy environment. Imagine how human existence will be affected without it. Our lives depend on it, like the other animals living on it.

You save a lot of money. The absence of wetlands changes the landscape. Polluting it will have dire consequences. Flooding can affect nearby communities. It will cause damage to properties, even human casualties. It also prompts many of those affected to relocate. The absence of such an environment can affect the weather. Such a change will affect human behaviour. Last but not the least, can you think of human existence without animals? Captivity is not a good thing. Think of the wetland as a flickering hope.

How about preparing your outdoor clothes and getting ready to go out? Nothing like visiting the nearest wetland.
