ATP Masters 1000: Q&AOctober 05, 2015

The finals of the Western and Southern Open saw Roger Federer defending his title successfully. He defeated Novak Djokovic, not losing a set along the way. This marked the 41st time these two players met. This was Federer's seventh Cincinnati Masters victory, making it his fourth tournament where he won seven or more titles. (The other three were Dubai, Halle, and Wimbledon.) He also denied Djokovic another chance of scoring a career Masters slam. Federer will travel to Shanghai, China next week, the penultimate Masters 1000 event. He's the defending champion.

Many tennis fans aren't clear about the Masters 1000. This would go back to the late 1980s, when the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the organizers of the World Championships Tennis (WCT) agreed on a series of nice tournaments, namely the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Masters, Monte Carlo Masters, Madrid Masters, Rome Masters, Canada Masters, Cincinnati Masters, Shanghai Masters, and Paris Masters. They would be next to the Grand Slam tournaments, and some are mandatory events.

Here are some questions asked by followers of the sport:

Why is it called ATP Masters 1000? The number denotes the number of points that a player will earn if he wins the tournament. It's half of what a Grand Slam champion will gain, but a thousand points can alter the rankings. It used to be called the ATP Masters Series.

Is it difficult to achieve a calendar Masters win? Djokovic's case shows that winning all nine Masters tournament is no easy feat. In fact, Federer has yet to win the titles in Monte Carlo and Rome. A calendar Grand Slam may be more challenging, as players must play seven best-of-five matches. The finals of the Masters tournaments were once played on the best-of-five format, until it was lessened to the best-of-three.

Who has the most Masters titles? Djokovic is head and shoulders above the rest, with 20 Masters titles in his trophy cabinet. And expect the figure to increase during the next few years. Federer is a distant second (15), while Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray are tied at third (10). Bob and Mike Bryan have the most doubles titles (22). They are more than half of Nenad Zimonjić, who has ten from different partners.

What will be the penalty for missing a Masters 1000 tournament? The player won't be penalized if it's due to health reason(s). Otherwise, he must start on the next tournament at zero.

Name the Americans who won the Masters 1000 tournament? No one. Yet. Andy Roddick reached the finals in three occasions, while Mardy Fish and John Isner were runners-up twice.

How about Australians? Ashley Fisher and Stephen Huss lost to Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram in the (doubles) finals of the 2009 Miami Masters.
