And the 2024 Summer Olympics Goes to... ParisSeptember 23, 2015
The International Olympic Committee (OIC) announced the five cities in the running to host the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad. The National Olympic Committee of Budapest, Hamburg, Los Angeles, Paris, and Rome have two years to woo and persuade the members of OIC, as they will make their choice during the 130th International Olympic Committee IOC Session in Lima, Peru.
There was supposed to be a mild frenzy after such an announcement, but not anymore. After the case of the 2022 Winter Olympics, it's a matter of which city is willing to gamble millions to host a huge sport event. Recent news reports reveal the odds in favour of Los Angeles. It seemed to be a good choice, as it hosted the 1932 and 1984 Games. Moreover, the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) did a thorough deliberation before making their decision. (Bostonians weren't willing to use taxpayer's money for the Olympics, while the residents of Chicago haven't got over their failed bid to host the 2016 Games.) But indicators point to Europe hosting the quadrennial spectacle once more.
And why Paris? Here are three reasons:
Fourth time's a charm. The French National Olympic and Sports Committee dealt with several setbacks. They narrowly lost to the British Olympic Association for the 2012 Summer Games. France (Paris) was a distant third behind China (Beijing) and Canada (Toronto) for the 2008 Games. And then there was another narrow loss to the Spanish delegation for the 1992 Games. 2024 would mark 100 years since the French capital hosted the Summer Games. A centennial can be appealing to the members of the OIC. If not, they may reward the National Olympic Committee of France for perseverance.
Venues won't be an issue with France. There might be a need for a new track stadium (for the athletics competition and opening and closing ceremonies), as Bercy Arena was the venue of the 1997 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics. Other than that, France won't have much of a problem. The UEFA Euro 2016 will be played in ten venues around France. Roland Garros is the site of the French Open. The 2010 World Fencing Championships was held at the Grand Palais. Major cities like Lyon can be used for other events.
Europe wants to bring the Olympics back to home soil. Some may be skeptical about it, after what happened to the bidding process for the 2022 Winter Games. The Summer Games may be a different matter. Many summer sport events take place in Europe. Fans will see more of Asia, as Pyeongchang, Tokyo, and Beijing will host the 2018, 2020, and 2022 Games respectively. But the stars (or rings) are aligning in Paris. Los Angeles might be lucky in 2032.
