Reading, And Nothing ElseApril 15, 2015
World Book and Copyright Day is on April 23. It falls on a Thursday. Are you in the mood to rediscover the pleasure of reading? You better be.
This event is a tribute to authors and their works, many of whom aren't fortunate to see their writings being appreciated and recognised. Any artist can relate, about a craft that doesn't guarantee a stable lifestyle. It could be tragic, but that won't be the case nowadays. Consider the writer, who can pursue an academic career as well. There's also journalism. It's a matter of being flexible and open to other options.
We want to remember Shakespeare, the great playwright he is. We don't want to forget the authors from the colonial period, for whom we owe our heritage. Let's not overlook the other writers, who didn't achieve the same level of stardom (or posthumous fame). It's likely that we have a copy of some of their works in our shelf. If you already read it, then go through the pages again.
So why do we celebrate World Book and Copyright Day? Let's look at some of the reasons:
Reading is the only way to remember these authors. Nothing will pleases writers more than to see (or hear) someone talk about their works. Some are sensitive, such that they'll react passionately if someone didn't say a favourable line. Not that we should be respectful, not that there should be a need to show political correctness either. To those who are no longer around, their works is a chance to look back at how the world turned. But pay attention to their views, and be marvelled at it. The outcome might have been different if there was technology back then. Likewise, think if they were around.
Reading do help us. To the writers of yesteryears, reading have been their refuge from whatever troubled them. It not only helped them become better individuals, but it also let them looked at the situation in a different light. This is no longer the case nowadays, with social media and all that stuff. But it would give us more reasons to open a book. Nothing would provide enlightenment than these esteemed writers. And they're not pulling a leg.
Reading is the simplest form of pleasure. Bookworms will attest to it - and you can forgive them for whatever quirks they have. We're not taking about packing your luggage, with an itinerary on hand. It's not about the enticing outdoors at this time of the year. You can find it in the pages of the books you have. It won't take an effort.
