Time to be Captain PlanetSeptember 07, 2015
Debris Month of Action takes place during the month of September, which is the perfect time to get involved in collecting debris off the coastlines. It's the beginning of spring. We head to the sea. There are many things to do, but frolicking won't be one.
This campaign is a good opportunity to be a superhero and save the Earth. There's no need to take it too seriously, donning a cape and find your Planeteers. Unless you want to take an active participation in the campaign, then you can do your share by keeping in mind of the following:
Make sure you don't leave any litter in the beach. No one prohibits you from bringing food and beverages to the coast, but be mindful of it. Make sure to collect your litter whenever you leave the premise. There shouldn't be any trace of empty bottles (or cans). Remember that the sea might claim it (during high tide). The sight of litter can be an eye sore, even from a distance. And it will have a long-term effect on the coastline. If it's your favourite beach, then you want it shining and spotless. Always.
Watch out for those cigarette butts. Smoking is allowed in beaches, but don't throw the cigarette butts anywhere. There's no excuse for not looking for a disposable area, be it near or far. And the butts mustn't end up in the sea. (Think about the fish that might mistake it for food.) Perhaps it will be better not to smoke in such places.
Don't pass up any litter you see. Not everyone will heed the messages of this campaign. If you don't have a clue, then don't worry. You'll figure it out once you see a litter. It will be nice to pick it up and look for the disposable bin. You won't get a reward, but think of the marine creatures. They'll be grateful (if they have the chance to talk).
Join the campaign. You want to meet new people who might end up as good mates. You want a new experience. You want a good excuse to spend more time in the beach. This is the moment you're waiting for. You don't have to be serious about it, you don't have to show less interest in it either. Be yourself. Show your genuine concern. Enjoy the sand, the sun, and the sea.
Get washed up. If you're apathetic about this campaign, then maybe you should take a dip. It won't be long before you realise that the seaside is the best place to be. You don't want this sun-kissed image to change, even disappear. You have an idea (or two) on what to do next.
