Give Love to your GrandparentsFebruary 23, 2015

NSW Seniors Week, to be held from March 14-22, can be considered a unique celebration in the Southern Hemisphere. The idea is also observed in other parts of the world, but the inhabitants of New South Wales must still be proud.

This week-long event would focus on the importance of the senior populace, of their contribution to Australian society. Technology makes it possible to live longer, and as a result, there's an increase in the number of senior citizens this past decade. Health may be an issue, but the government - and companies - can work something out. (Flexible working schedule may be one of those items in the agenda.) It wouldn't be remote to see the distant future, where the number of senior citizens is almost the same, if not equal, as the number of youths. Whether or not the old ones will outnumber their younger counterpart remains to be seen, but we don't need to think about this long and hard. It will be better to prepare for this year's Senior Week. (It's just around the corner!)

We can expect a grand celebration, even a series of programs that have been in the works. Aside from our grandparents, we know old people whom we look up to. Unless you'll be part of the grand scheme of things, you can come up with your own observance. Make it small yet memorable. Yes, we're talking about your grandparents. So what can you do? Here are some suggestions:

Have a good time with them. It will be better to be spontaneous about this, letting them know a week (or two) in advance. Go out and walk. This may not be original, and it's a repetitive routine. Keep in mind that walking is good for the health. (You can't expect them to run with you. Bicycle can be another option, but there may be some difficulties to encounter.) You can talk about anything, even reminisce about past experiences. Nothing more enjoyable (and special) than that.

Watch a telly. It may not be a good idea, as being couch potatoes might not fancy everyone involved. But we don't have to move a lot. Who doesn't like relaxing? As for what programs to see, there are options. (Reruns of the World Cricket Cup can be considered as one.)

A hearty meal with Grandpa and Grandma. Another suggestion that doesn't require lots of thinking. You must not dismiss it, as there's nothing more memorable than a good, if not enjoyable, conversation with the ones you love. Why not make it more special by inviting other senior citizens whom you consider as good friends? Don't think you'll be out of place (unless you're of middle age). Don't try too hard to impress during the conversation. Take it easy, enjoy the meal, and see where it goes. It will surely be a good one.

Do you have other ideas? Let us know. Don't keep it to yourself.
