How to Love the BrainFebruary 19, 2015
The title of the article may seem balderdash, as the brain is not fragile as the other organs in the human body. Many of us will remember the skull, which protects it. Besides, those who are afflicted with illnesses affecting the brain are not many. (Put it in another way, the figure is lower than those who suffer from heart diseases.) Those who believe in it are entirely mistaken.
Brain Injury Awareness Week, which is held from March 9-15, aims to make the public aware of the symptoms of brain injury. It also reaches out to the families of those afflicted with this illness, and provide support to them. But there's more to this than meets the eye. This campaign also educates the public on the importance of this organ. Some might be surprised at what they would learn (and this is not about telling you to think).
What is there to know about the brain? Why we must keep a closer look? Here are a few reasons that will make you think twice:
The brain is more susceptible than you think. Too much salt can pose danger to your kidneys. Likewise, frequent smoking can do harm to your lungs later on. In the case of the brain, it's hard to point out what can put it in a precarious condition. But there are many factors. Lack of sleep. No exercise at all. There are other things to consider. Negative thoughts can influence your health in the long run. The other things (to assess) can be researched and studied.
The brain gets injured, and how. If you've been surfing the Internet for quite some time, then you might stumble into the case of Ramon Sampedro. He became a quadriplegic after a diving accident at a young age of 25. He dived from the top of the cliff, head first, unaware that the part of the sea was shallow. The moral of the story? The skull is not that thick as we thought. This is why a helmet must be used in certain occasions. (If you're swimming, then make sure that the water is deep enough.)
Commit to a healthy lifestyle. What you sow is what you reap. If you're abusing your body, then expect something serious, if not grave, to happen to you when you're old. Think of this as an investment, as living healthy will keep you from being vulnerable to all kinds of illnesses when you reach middle age. This is one more reason to look forward to your golden years.
