How to Write Academic PapersApril 03, 2012
This does not mean that what your teachers taught you about writing in high school will not be of any help in college, or in academic writing. You only need to learn what and how to write these types of papers and you will be on your way to resolving one of the major difficulties for many students.
There are four major characteristics of writing academic papers which you need to observe at all times. These papers need to be written in an objective, precise, impersonal and semi-formal manner. While carrying out this exercise, you also need to stick to certain values which include truth, balance and evidence. Any academic paper you write needs to stick to these values at all times. Such papers need to be written in a way that ensures they show that the student is getting better at analyzing facts and then using them to make an argument using his/her own language.
When writing academic papers, you need to examine the topic you have been given very closely. After you have done your introduction, you need to write your thesis and then go ahead to prove it using the rest of the paper. The student needs to develop the habit of using an outline to guide him/her in this process. Use the outline to write the first draft of your paper and while doing this it is advisable to write whatever comes to your mind. The next step is to divide the thoughts you wish to relay into paragraphs.
While writing academic papers, experts advise that you follow a certain pattern. One of the well used patters is where you first make a claim and then go ahead to provide the necessary evidence to support the same. Finish off by writing an intelligent review of that claim and its relevance to the paper you are writing. Remember that all this is happening while you are writing the first draft. Once you are through with the draft, write the second draft using transitional drafts and then beef up any paragraphs with more information before finishing by writing the final draft.
