Think Big, Dare to be DifferentApril 02, 2015

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”

- Walden; or, Life in the Woods (Henry David Thoreau, 1854)

The greatest feats in mankind begin with an idea, which is out of the ordinary. The World Creativity and Innovation Week, held on April 15-21, dares everyone to make a positive difference. It's not about the search for the next Einstein, although we shouldn't discourage students to be like the German-born theoretical physicist. It's about our ability to think big.

Let's be clear about something: There's nothing wrong about being sensible. And most of us rather prefer the routine existence. But some like to be different. In many cases, this can be due to circumstances. There are those who expect more from themselves. Ambition is part of human nature. Not a few can be discouraging, but what if these individuals are truly capable of doing what their minds envision?

The World Creativity and Innovation Week wants us to focus on our imagination and use it in the best possible way. It doesn't need to be a grand one, but it can be something good - and useful - in the school or the neighbourhood. Why must we encourage such an activity? Here are three reasons to think about:

The world needs these kind of individuals. This type of person engages in the arts. It's not surprising, as this field promotes creativity and uniqueness. Alas, most of us are too late to realise its worth. Only a handful of artists are lucky enough to live to see their efforts being rewarded handsomely. We can only provide the proper guidance to students, to let them use their creative faculty without criticising them in case it didn't please us. Keep in mind that this can be trial and error. Another thing is we don't have control over everything. Always encourage the young ones, and if you're a student (and reading this), then try to be courageous.

People love success. Let's try to put this into the proper perspective. People are drawn to successful people because they project that image that most of us want to (or can imagine to be like). There's no need to go through the downside, as many are capable of handling it. As many successful individuals can attest, the rewards are products of one bold idea. Not a few will find it crazy. It will be up to us to act on it. There's no guarantee, but we'll never know if we can't try.

Creativity only brings out the best. It's not about a fine piece of art, it's not about a library of classics either. These artists are living testaments, not exceptions. Don't expect anything right away. Trust in the talent, and believe something good will come out of it.
