How to build a community? Get to know the neighbourhood.

It's important to develop a good relationship with your neighbours. This is how communities flourish. This is not about continuing a tradition, it's not having each other's back either. Although Neighbour Day wants to focus on health issues, which will be the campaign this year, the organisers doesn't want to forget the folks not far from your doorsteps.

There are three different ways of doing it:

Invite them to some beer and barbecue. You won't see the end of sunshine, as summer will go on for some time. No excuse not to go out, and nothing better than having company. Why not bring along the good people from the other side of the fence? How about the inhabitants living in front of your home? Why not the entire block? It may sound odd, coming off as a bit too friendly. It's true that we have to mind our own business, but the neighbourhood can't be nonexistent for too long. You have to introduce yourself (or one of them knocks on your door). You also don't need to give excuse(s), if you don't feel like going with them. No harm will be done (if you'll be sociable).

Get to know the children and their parents. Chances are many, if not most, of the kids in the neighbourhood attend the same school. Expect them to be good mates (instead of the dysfunctional ones, like Muriel Heslop's girlfriends). It will be natural to know these kids, even get acquainted with their parents. If there'll be a school event, make sure you'll have time for it. This can be the right moment to spend more time with these people. Not that you can't invite them to your home (or theirs), but there's something about the school grounds that will make this campaign more worthwhile. The teachers? Perhaps. If they happen to be living along the street where you live, then there's nothing to worry about. On the contrary, this will turn out to be more enjoyable.

Be part of any event. It will be impossible not to have any activity in your community, which can be any worthy cause that can be beneficial to the neighbourhood. It can also be an informal set-up, which is better. (Nothing to prepare! What can be better than that?) Everyone's busy. There are too many items in the plate, which can be more than we can handle at times. Nothing can hold you back if you want to. You'll have a great time. It will dawn on you, at any moment, that you have done something good. It's a great feeling. Make it double.

Mark your calendar on March 29, in case you've been out of the loop. There's enough time to come up with other ideas. Yours might be better. Don't hesitate, as you can expect smiling faces (and a hug).
