How Australian Students HolidayOctober 05, 2015

It wasn't long ago when vacationing in the US or Europe was an option. The Australian dollar was going strong. In fact, one dollar would go a long way if you have chips in mind. But that's not the case nowadays. Some call it crunch time, while others point to the drop of oil price. But it doesn't stop Aussies from packing their backpack and heading to the airport.

Aussies are born to travel. Don't be surprised if Alex Garland had us in mind, while penning "The Beach". In fact, this image could be the reason why many tourists are drawn to Down Under. The most visited country in the world? You can bet your dollar. But have you wondered the places where Aussie students go on a holiday? If you're young and raring to see the world, then it's not difficult to narrow down the choices. Europe is not one of those destinations, as most lean towards exotic places. Still clueless about it? Don't be surprised about the following countries:

Indonesia. Arafura Sea and Timor Sea separate Australia and Indonesia. If you live in Western Australia or the Northern Territory, then you have heard about Bali. Elizabeth Gilbert went to this island paradise to forget her divorce, but you may be too young to empathize with what she had gone through. (It's OK if you haven't heard "Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia" or seen the Julia Roberts starrer.) Surfer's paradise. Captivating terraced fields. And the culture. If you're one of those young ones who rather want a good time, then fine. Skip surfing. Don't include Ubud in your itinerary. And forget cultural experiences. Buy a beer, head to the beach, and imagine a full moon party.

Thailand. If you want the real full moon party, then you only need to pay a little more. Southern Thailand is behind Bali by two hours, but you don't need to figure out what it means. As any tourist will tell, this is the most convenient destination. You run out of cash? You don't have to look far for an ATM machine. Worry about spending? There are many options when it comes to accommodations. You may want to consider less time in the isles in Andaman Sea and more in the northern parts. It's way cheaper and there are many things to do. Water tubing. Gliding the tree tops. A day (or half a day) at the Elephant Nature Park. If you want something more outrageous, then Songkran is the one for you. Remember to respect the customs. And never wear a mankini in public.

Australia. This may surprise you, but it's perfectly logical. If spending will be an issue, then better not far from where you live. There's a good chance you'll go with your best mates. You'll be familiar with the places. (It takes courage to be in a foreign territory.) And we yearn for a sun-kissed body. The beach is a stone's throw away.
